As we look to the future of Information Technology in healthcare, based on the present structure we see a picture of continuing growth and significant cost increases. These trends will become more acute for all provider organizations as they strive to support the entire function and purpose of the entity. Further exacerbated by the national agenda for health with an emphasis on interoperability, the complexity of the infrastructure required to support clinical diagnostics and record keeping will continue to expand. The facilitation of interoperability combined with the need to suport administration creates a rather staggering picture of complexity and cost.
What will the picture be like in five - or ten - years? Can we continue with the same approach and methodologies we are using today and absorb the increasing cost? Is there a more efficiant process or approach - even an incremental improvement?
